About Drainage

Triad clay soil + heavy rain = drainage problems.

Piedmont North Carolina sits on heavy red clay that doesn't drain well, on rolling hills that funnel water in unexpected directions, and gets some of the heaviest rain events in the eastern US. If you have soggy spots in the yard, water in the basement, eroding hillsides, or dying grass β€” you have a drainage problem.

Most landscapers treat drainage as an afterthought. We treat it as engineering. Every drainage solution we install starts with understanding where the water comes from, where it goes, and how to redirect it without creating a problem somewhere else on your property β€” or your neighbor's.

Our most common solutions are French drains, dry creek beds (river rock channels), surface grading, sump pump installations, and downspout extensions. We often combine them with retaining walls when erosion is also at play.

How It Works

From soggy spot to dry ground.

01

Free Assessment

We walk your property, identify water sources, and diagnose the real cause of the problem.

02

Drainage Plan

After we diagnose the cause on-site, we send a clear plan with options and pricing β€” no upselling.

03

Install

Trenching, pipe work, gravel, river rock, grading β€” done with care for your existing landscape.

04

Test & Restore

We test the system, restore disturbed areas, and walk through with you to confirm it works.

Our Build Standards

How we engineer drainage that actually works.

Drainage isn't a one-size solution β€” it's engineering. The difference between a drain that lasts decades and one that clogs in a year is in the details. Here's what every Garrison's drainage project gets.

  • βœ“
Diagnose before we dig — We trace the actual water source and flow path. Most failed drainage installs treat symptoms, not the cause.
  • βœ“
Proper pipe and slope — Solid PVC for surface runoff, perforated corrugated pipe for groundwater capture. Minimum 1% slope for reliable flow, no exceptions.
  • βœ“
Filter fabric and washed gravel — Pipe wrapped in non-woven filter fabric and surrounded by clean washed gravel β€” the only way to keep sediment from clogging the system.
  • βœ“
Safe discharge points — Water has to go somewhere. We design discharge that doesn't flood your neighbor, your foundation, or your driveway.
  • βœ“
Restoration, not just trenches — We restore lawns, beds, and landscaping after we're done. Most clients can't tell where the trench ran within a season.
Common Questions

What you need to know.

How much does drainage work cost? +
Drainage costs depend entirely on the source of the problem and how much work it takes to solve. A single soggy spot might be a quick fix; a foundation moisture issue with regrading is a much bigger project. We always start with a free assessment and a clear, line-item quote β€” no surprises.
Do I need a French drain or a dry creek bed? +
French drains handle subsurface groundwater (the kind that makes yards soggy or seeps into basements). Dry creek beds handle surface runoff (water flowing across the yard from rain). Sometimes you need both. We'll tell you what your specific problem requires.
Can drainage problems damage my foundation? +
Yes. Persistent water against a foundation is one of the most expensive problems a homeowner can have β€” it leads to cracks, settling, and eventually structural damage. Fixing drainage early is far cheaper than fixing foundation problems later.
Will you mess up my lawn during the install? +
We have to dig trenches, but we minimize disturbance and restore everything we touch. Most lawns recover fully within a few weeks. For sensitive areas we use trenchless methods when possible.
How long do drainage systems last? +
A properly installed French drain with quality pipe and clean gravel should function for 20–30+ years. The biggest enemies are tree roots and clogging from sediment, both of which we account for in our installs.
Do you handle downspout drainage too? +
Yes. Disconnecting downspouts from foundation areas and burying extensions to safe outflows is one of the simplest, most effective drainage fixes. We do it as a standalone or as part of larger projects.
